The building is truly immense, but strangely lacking in sophistication, kitsch might be a good word. Also the workmanship would lead to a lot of snagging in the UK. Marble columns that are chipped, plaster that is not entirely smooth and wooden doors that have shrunken joints. Still I don't suppose anyone else notices that.
The Romanians were confused over what to do with the building after the downfall is Ceaușescu, some wanted to demolish the entire building since it represented everything that was bad about his meglomania, but good sense prevailed and now it is used by the government, but from what I could see that was just a small section. The guide told us that if all the lights were ever to be switched on it would cause a blackout in Bucharest.
